Zuba Bassa beat invite Geordie Latinos to join them on stage.Consett the World celebrated its first birthday on Saturday and made more than £2,700 through a concert and a mixed football competition.

More than 130 people were served up a feast of music from all over the world at the concert at Consett Civic Centre on November 15, with two live bands: Geordie Latinos – the salsa band put together by former Newcastle United star, Nolberto Solano – and Afro-Scottish Zuba Bassa Beat.

Geordie Latinos leader Jose Escobar, from Ecuador, led an impromptu salsa class with around thirty members of the audience dancing in front of the stage. Jose also got through to Nobby Solano in Greece by mobile phone and broadcast his conversation through the PA system.

At the end of the evening, Zuba’s Jerry Boweh from Liberia invited the Geordie Latinos to join them on stage.

Organiser Ged Naughton said: “It was an unforgettable night and it really summed up what Consett the World is about. Both bands worked really hard and gave us an experience that I don’t think has ever taken place in Consett before. We made some great contacts on the night and sold £400 worth of hats, T-shirts, bags and pens. It was an all-round success, so thanks to everyone who helped make it so.”
